Mr Cowen

Penryn Junior School

Mr Robin H N Cowen

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to our school website. We hope to give you a flavour of our school - what we've achieved, where we are now and what we offer, and what our plans are for the future.

We have high aims for the children which were brilliantly summed up by Ofsted after their 2001 inspection: "The School is successful in offering a happy and secure environment in which pupils are given the confidence to work to their full potential". Exactly ! I would only add that we also try to offer the same for staff, parents, governors and our many partners that help us.

In 2004 Ofsted judged us to be "a good school with some excellent features".

I work with an extremely conscientious and caring staff and it is through their efforts that the school has built its tradition of excellence and progress. From our SATs results over the last few years we know that not only are more of our children achieving the national targets (Level 4), but more each year are achieving above the national targets (Level 5).

We believe that a child's success in education comes from a partnership between home, school and the wider community.

Penryn College

"achieving through challenge"

Marie Hunter BA

Our motto is "Achieving through Challenge". Every child who attends this College is challenged in numerous ways to achieve their full potential. We need parents help to do this - with homework and projects, to attend parents evenings and celebrations, to cheer on the sports field and to tell us if things are not as they should be.

Penryn College was categorised by Her Majesty's Chief Inspector as a "Gold Star School" in his Annual Report which compares standards in schools across the country. We are delighted that our last OFSTED Inspection recognised us as an outstanding school.

We became a Sports College in 1998, the seventeenth in the country to receive this accolade. This means that the young people are given greater opportunities in a wide range of sport, particularly outdoor education. These wider opportunities exist in a full range of subjects, not just in sport. We have just been officially recognised as a "High Performing Specialist School" because of the standards achieved by our young people of whom we are immensely proud.

Helping young people to develop the skills of leadership - learning how to lead themselves and to lead others is an integral part of the educational experience we provide. We run a wide ranging out of hours programme for young people in the local area, last year providing over 4,000 places in a range of academic, sporting and just "fun" activities. These were led by over 40 young leaders. Part of their training is giving 30 hours community service during the year. We believe that young people have masses of skills they can contribute to their local community - they just need the opportunity.

The Department for Education and Skills designated the College as a "Leading Edge School" because we are prepared to share our work with other schools. We work particularly closely with the Five Island School on Scilly as well as the Penryn Partnership, a collaborative of 9 primary schools to provide a range of exciting opportunities for our young people. 450 young people of all ages from our Partnership performed "Joseph and His Technicolour Dreamcoat" to over audiences of over a thousand.

I hope this website will give you a flavour of Penryn College - but that is all it is. The best way to learn about us is to see us in action on a normal school day. This is by far the best way to gain a more comprehensive picture of what we have to offer.
