Room Painting 101

It isn’t as basic as it looks, but one project that pretty much anyone can do on their house is painting. If your house has not been painted in a while, you know that a painting project may be a challenge. Provided that you have enough time to do the job, it can save you money by doing your own painting, and prep work. If you feel that there isn’t the time, then you must look into hiring someone.

Scrape First

Paint doesn’t last indefinitely, and eventually, it begins to peel and look horrible. At this point about all you can do is to get a paint scraper and scrape as much of the paint off as you can. If your residence is really old, you could have several coats of paint, which will compound the problem. You will certainly encounter a tougher time if the layers of paint below are oil-based. As soon as the peeling paint has become stripped off, you must plug any holes in the wood with putty or spackle parts of your drywall and sand it down as best you can. Once you have completed this process, clean off the dust and let it dry out. Chances are you’ll want to allow it to sit for 24 hours before you start painting.

Get Rid of Moisture

Among the much bigger complications with older homes is from moisture build-up. Paint will start to crack when you have condensation or perhaps leaks. You will notice this typically in the bathroom, where mold and mildew will also grow. Even though commonplace in bathrooms, this issue can also occur in other parts of the home. Sometimes the house will have a leak, or shrubs that are too close. If your paint is cracking on account of dampness, then you need to find a different option. If it’s in the living space, you will need to make a solution that is one part bleach and three parts water to remove the paint and kill the mildew. If it’s on the exterior of the house, you simply wash it with a pressure washer and the solution that comes with it.

Choosing a Color

When the paint on your residence is starting to vanish, that is also a good time to repaint. Such a thing happens in most cases outside the home where there is direct sunlight practically for the whole day. To prevent this problem, avoid bright colors, or bold ones, like red. If you’d like some sort of rich color, find one with a ruddy tone or golden.

You shouldn’t ever let your home wind up in lousy shape. You need to take the time to repaint every few years and repair any leaks as soon as they happen.
