Proper Care and Maintenance of Your Wood Fence

Don’t let the concept of wood fence maintenance scare you away, anyone of age can do it assuming all is well and healthy, etc. Unfortunately, this is part of owning a fence, and even metal fences have some things that need or should be done. Yes, you have bought a fence, but then you have also added some value to your home and property. Avoid mistakes with wood fence maintenance because they will be detrimental to your investment.

Regular Maintenance

The best route here with your fence is to catch problems early before they get too big and costly, so just inspect it maybe once a month and it only takes a few minutes. You can learn a lot if you make the effort to form an inspection log for your fence, and you can look back over time and see what has happened. You can record each time you inspect it and write down anything that needs attention, and it is good to have this so you can refer back to it if needed. And be sure you pay close attention to the fence posts, and the point of entry in the ground are high risk areas. One of the greatest risks or threats aside from moisture and rot are termites, and not much needs to be said about them.

Mind the Mold

Mold will grow on just about anything except for metal, and this is one area where metal has a clear advantage. When talking about maintenance, most people have no clue about why it needs to be done, and this is an excellent example of why it should be done on a regular basis. If your stain is low quality or very thin, then the risk with this is weather will degrade it faster and this opens the way for mold. Nothing replaces fast action when it comes to just about anything including a proven plan to keep mold at bay with the right strategies and techniques proven to work well.

Staining

Care needs to be taken when removing dirt and other matter from a wood fence because you have to remember there is stain on it. Spending an afternoon with this will not be bad, plus this is not a practice that needs to be performed every year. The only exception to this is if the wood is exposed from the stain that should be on it in the first place, and the best way to clean wood fences is with a mixture of water and bleach – very simple. Going with a high concentration of bleach can in time work to wear through the stain which can cause exposure to the weather. This is not the only method to get this done, and in that case you can research alternatives on the net that are effective and may not involve a chemical of any kind. If you want to learn more about wood fencing maintenance methods, then visit your local contractor. But do talk to the installer because this is the person who has seen a lot of fences, and this person hopefully is a professional. Taking the right type of action will put you in momentum and your fence will be installed that much faster.
